Make Wallpaper Engine open on startup

  1. Open Wallpaper Engine settings.
  2. Go to the General tab.
  3. Enable automatic startup.
  4. Try normal priority first; high priority uses a Windows service and may be more likely to trigger antivirus interference.

Turn off automatic startup

  1. Open Settings → General.
  2. Disable automatic startup.
  3. If it still starts, check that you did not separately add it to Windows Startup Apps or the Startup folder.

Pause, stop, or quit

Pause or Stop playback

Use application playback rules when you only want wallpapers inactive during games, fullscreen apps, or work.

Quit completely

Right-click the Wallpaper Engine tray icon and choose Quit.

Before changing 32/64-bit mode

Official support recommends quitting the current instance first, then launching the desired version through Steam.

Normal versus high-priority startup

ModeHow it worksWhen to use it
NormalLaunches with standard Windows startup applications.Recommended first choice; simpler and generally reliable.
High priorityRegisters a Windows service so Wallpaper Engine starts earlier.Try only if normal startup is too late or unreliable.

The official guide warns that high-priority startup can be less reliable because some antivirus products mistake the service behavior for something malicious. It does not make Wallpaper Engine render faster.

When startup is enabled but no wallpaper appears

Check for the Wallpaper Engine tray icon. If the app is running but screens are blank or assigned incorrectly, change Monitor identification in General settings to Layout or GDI. This is especially relevant for multi-monitor systems, docks, and graphics drivers that assign new display identifiers after boot.

If neither startup mode works, remove forced administrator compatibility settings and review antivirus or firewall rules for the official Steam installation directory. Toggle automatic startup off and on after making changes.

Choose the right way to stop it

  • Pause: freezes animation while keeping the wallpaper ready for a quick resume.
  • Stop: unloads playback for lower resource use during games or demanding work.
  • Disable startup: prevents automatic launch at the next Windows sign-in.
  • Quit: closes the current session through the system tray icon.
  • Uninstall: use Steam Manage → Uninstall only when you actually want to remove the application.
